21 DecHappy Holidays, Y’all

Sorry about the lack of updates; work is crazy, we’re trying to get our next issue ready to ship before we break for Christmas and everyone goes home. Ah, well. Actually, I’m at work now, so this will be short. A holiday, relationship anecdote.*

I share an apartment with my older sister, Rachel. The way our kitchen is set up, there’s a crack between the sink and the counter. It’s about an inch wide, the length of the counter, and several feet deep. About a month ago, I was doing the dishes; to get them out of the way, I put all the silverware into a cup and balanced it on the edge of the counter. When I moved the dish next to it, it toppled over, and basically all the silverware we own fell down into this abyss. There’s no physical way to reach down and get it out, so it’s still there to this day, leaving us with two spoons, two knives, and but a single fork.

Last weekend, my family had its annual giant Chanukah gathering out in Jersey. GC agreed to come along with us and meet my extended family. It’s important to note that GC likes to describe himself as a good ol’ southern boy; he definitely didn’t grow up in a particularly feminist atmosphere. In fact, he really had no exposure to the ideologies of feminism until moving to the city, and the first conversation we ever had was an argument about sexism in language. Needless to say, I’m the first feminist he’s dated.

As we were heading home, we discussed Chanukah presents; he and I haven’t bought them for one another yet. In fact, he had no idea what to get me.

Rachel: You know what you should get her? Silverware.
GC: Hm. Well. Here’s the thing. I’m pretty new to feminism, but I’m pretty sure on the first holiday we’re spending together, maybe I shouldn’t get my feminist girlfriend kitchenware. I’m just sayin’.

Aww. Well, I thought it was cute.

*I realize this is my third entry in a row about GC. Ack. Please bear with me.
